Best clip length and format for TikTok and YouTube Shorts

Last updated

A longer clip is not a better clip. The useful limits are the ones the platforms publish, and the length of the file JP Clips renders: a vertical 9:16 frame, a clip that already starts on the moment, and captions you add yourself.

The ceilings the platforms publish

Kick's create-clips article says a Kick clip is 10 to 180 seconds, and that the maximum is 180 seconds on desktop and mobile. You can shorten it with Kick's slider before you publish it. JP Clips collects clips that already exist. It does not trim a new in-point for you. The export is capped at 3 minutes, the same ceiling Kick states, so a normal Kick clip fits.

YouTube's Shorts help page says short-form videos are up to three minutes, uploaded at a maximum of 1080p, with a title of at most 100 characters. Check the file you downloaded rather than assuming a resolution.

TikTok's pages do not match each other. The camera tools page says videos you create in TikTok can be up to 60 seconds, and videos you upload can be up to 3 minutes. Videos longer than 60 seconds cannot use Duet or Stitch. The TikTok Studio page says a browser upload must be MP4 or WebM, 720x1280 or higher, up to 30 minutes, and under 10 GB. Follow the limit the uploader shows you.

The 9:16 layouts in JP Clips

Edit and Download offers three layouts. Single panel is a full-screen 9:16 frame, for a moment where one picture can fill the phone. Split screen top and split screen bottom keep a face and the game when a single crop would hide one of them. The background is blur, solid black, or solid white. Mirror flips the video horizontally.

Pick the layout for the clip you have. If the face is the joke, do not crop it off. If the game event is the joke, do not hide it behind a huge face. Changing the layout does not use your allowance. Starting the render does. Premium can add a saved custom watermark. Free and Trial stay in Discord, 5 renders per UTC day or 20 per UTC day for 14 days. The prices are on the plans.

Hooks and captions are your job

JP Clips does not add a hook. The first seconds of the Kick clip are the first seconds of the file. Choose a clip that starts on the action, or on a line that makes sense without the previous hour. If the clip opens on a menu, a loading screen, or a quiet pause, another clip is a better file. You cannot repair that opening inside this editor.

Captions are also outside JP Clips. Add them in TikTok or YouTube, in words a viewer can read with the sound off. Keep them clear of the face and the important part of the game. YouTube's title is a separate field of up to 100 characters. You do not have to fill the whole three minutes. A shorter moment that is already complete is easier to follow. JP Clips will not trim the clip, so pick a Kick clip whose length is already right.

Post the file you saved

Download the render and upload it yourself. A normal JP Clips file lasts 2 hours, or 6 hours from completion if it was recovered after a restart. JP Clips does not schedule the TikTok or YouTube post, and it does not write the hashtags. Getting the frame vertical is only half of it. The clip still has to be a moment someone would stop for. The money guide is Clipping.com's Kick campaign, after you upload from your own account. The vertical file comes from JP Clips: join discord.gg/jpclips, or read the home page for the plans.

Common questions

What is the best length for a Kick clip?

There isn't one length that wins. Kick's own article says a clip is 10 to 180 seconds. JP Clips exports are capped at 3 minutes and do not trim a new opening. Pick a clip that already makes sense, then check the upload limit in the app you are posting to.

Does JP Clips make the video 9:16?

Yes. Single panel is a full-screen 9:16 frame with a blur, black, or white background. Split screen top and split screen bottom are the other two layouts. Mirror is a horizontal flip.

Can JP Clips add captions or a hook?

No. Add captions and the on-screen words in TikTok or YouTube. The first seconds of the Kick clip are the first seconds of the render.

YouTube says three minutes and TikTok says something else. Which do I follow?

Follow the app you are uploading to. YouTube's Shorts page says up to three minutes. TikTok's camera tools page says uploads up to 3 minutes, and videos over 60 seconds cannot use Duet or Stitch. TikTok Studio's page says browser uploads up to 30 minutes.
